I am 34 years old, and have been listening to Rap all of my life. When I was in middle school most kids were listening to Michael Jackson, or Madonna or Prince. I on the other hand was listening to Run DMC, The Fat Boys, LL Cool J, Kurtis Blow, etc.
Whenever my Mom said she was going to KMART, I would beg her to bring me along. KMART was favorite source for music as they had the rap compilations at a reduced price. Whenever I would go to Harmony House, tapes were like $10 each. Well at KMART a good compilation could be anywhere from $4.99-$7.99.
Without these compilations I would never have heard Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Disco Three (Fat Boys), Devine Sounds, The Treacherous Three, Doug E. Fresh, The Rappin' Duke, Ms. Melody, BDP, Just-Ice, Ricky D (Slick Rick), MC Lyte, Mantronix and the list goes on.
Now most of you reading this probably have only heard of a few of the artists listed above. These artists were the building blocks of what Big Daddy Kane, Eric B & Rakim, Notorious BIG, 2Pac, Ice Cube, Kool Moe Dee, Eazy-E, Nice & Smooth, Cyprus Hill, etc. built upon.
In my personal opinion, roughly the time 2Pac and Notorious BIG were murdered, rap changed. Other than eminem, Jay-Z, NAS, and a small handful of other rappers, rap died. I haven't heard a good hip-hop song in years.
Which leads me to my original question, am I too old for rap? I tend to lean to yes, but as a 2pac songs comes on, or a get a craving for Long Live the Kane, I remember what Hip-Hop used to be. I remember how rhymes used to flow, I remember how the combination of beats, rhythm, and flow made rap the most innovative music ever created.
Am I too old to roll my windows down and pump Raising Hell on a hot summer day? Has the time passed when I can rap with KRS-ONE with My Philosophy? Can I no longer yell along with 2Pac about M.O.B. I just don't know.
